From screen to hand: why in-house 3D printing changes the design conversation

The model isolates the form of the building so massing, roof relationships and the connection between volumes can be assessed without the distraction of finishes or landscaping.

The simplified model makes the overall composition immediately readable. Main volumes, roof pitches, chimneys and lower additions can be compared without material choices competing for attention.

This kind of study is useful when several forms meet. It shows whether the hierarchy feels intentional, whether an addition sits comfortably against the original building and where transitions may need more work.

As a physical model, the same geometry can be held, rotated and viewed from angles that are difficult to anticipate on a flat drawing. It gives clients and project teams a shared object to discuss.

Printing the study in-house also supports quick iteration. A revised roof, opening or connection can be modelled and tested before the design progresses into detailed information.
